1) The first American president to wear a full beard while in office was Abraham Lincoln. Grace Bedell, an 11-year-old girl who wrote to him prior to the 1860 presidential election, suggested that he grow a beard.
2) Lincoln’s reputation for morality and honesty led to him being referred to as “Honest Abe” frequently.
3) As the first American president to be assassinated, Lincoln was killed the day after Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth shot him on April 14, 1865, while he was at a play at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.
4) During the American Civil War, on November 19, 1863, Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. The speech, regarded as one of the best in American history, placed a strong emphasis on the values of democracy and equality.
